Feeling Crabby?

Many of us will have nostalgic memories of going crabbing when on holiday as a child, and the pleasure doesn’t fade as we age, but how can we ensure we are being sustainable and kind to the crabs now we are older and have a little more awareness about the environment. Throw away, plastic seaside toys such as crab lines are a major contributor to coastal and sea pollution, you’d be surprised to see how many are left behind!

Crabbing is fantastic fun for the whole family.

Eco-friendly beach toys are finally making a dent in the market. Make sure you ask in shops for them so owners become aware that there is a demand. Online shops such as Eco Beach and Envirotoy have a range of plastic alternative beach fun toys to explore. If you’d like to learn more about plastic beach pollution, then take a look at our local Beach Guardian CIC on how to get involved, they are awe-inspiring. But back to crabbing, what’s the latest Dos and Don’ts?

Ditch the plastic Crab Lines and try an alternative!

Gone Crabbing has produced an excellent guide to safe and responsible crabbing, in addition to Visit Cornwall. I’ll let you into a little secret, I once won a major crabbing contest over the border in North Devon, all without those nasty, rusty hooks and plastic lines. Just a few pairs of my mothers’ best Pretty Pollys enveloping a tasty local Mackerel. Catch of a lifetime.

Remember that crabs are an important part of the marine ecosystem and need special care when both caught and released.

Our location means you are only a few miles from both Newquay and Padstow Harbours, which are perfect for crabbing. If you really are tempted to be sustainable, you can’t do better than the simply gorgeous handmade and plastic-free Crab Lines, made right here in Cornwall from Made in Golant, all in colours inspired by our beautiful Cornish Coast.
