Transforming Our Farm and Campsite into a Woodland Haven

Creating a Woodland

Welcome to the journey of transforming areas of our farm and eco campsite into a vibrant woodland habitat. Inspired by the profound importance of tree planting for the environment, with the support of Forest for Cornwall, we have undertaken a 2 year ambitious task of reintroducing native and diverse tree species to our land. Join us as we delve into the significance of this ecological endeavor and explore the unique characteristics of the trees we’ve carefully chosen to nurture.

The Environmental Impact of Tree Planting:

Trees are the unsung heroes of our planet, tirelessly working to improve air quality, combat climate change, and provide habitat for countless species. As we face the challenges of a changing climate, tree planting has become an increasingly vital tool in our environmental toolkit.

  1. Carbon Sequestration:
Trees act as nature’s carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and storing it in their biomass. The more trees we plant, the more carbon we can sequester, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  2. Biodiversity Support:
A diverse range of tree species creates a thriving ecosystem by providing food, shelter, and nesting sites for various wildlife. Our selection includes Norway Spruce, Scots Pine, and Silver Birch, among others, ensuring a rich tapestry of habitats.
  3. Soil Health:
Trees play a crucial role in maintaining soil health. Their roots stabilise the soil, preventing erosion, and their fallen leaves contribute to nutrient-rich organic matter, fostering a fertile environment for other plants to flourish.

Our Tree Selection:

Creating a Woodland

Each tree species we’ve chosen brings its own unique contribution to our woodland landscape.

Creating a Woodland
  1. Conifers:
Norway Spruce and Scots Pine are hardy evergreens, adding a touch of greenery year-round. Their tall canopies provide shelter for wildlife, while their needles contribute to the forest floor’s organic layer. They also protect the deciduous saplings from the wind and weather.
  2. Deciduous Beauties:
Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Aspen, Pedunculate Oak, Sessile Oak, Beech, White Willow, Grey Willow, Goat Willow, Holly, Wild Cherry, Sycamore, and Sweet Chestnut offer a dazzling display of seasonal colors. Their leaves, flowers, and fruits create a dynamic and visually stunning woodland.
  3. Understory Heroes:
Crab Apple, Rowan, Hazel, Hawthorn, Elder, Privet, Wayfaring, Broom, Dog Rose, Purging Buckthorn, Blackthorn, and Spindle form the understory, contributing to the biodiversity of our woodland. Their presence supports a myriad of insects, birds, and small mammals.

So, there you have it – our little farm and eco campsite is turning into a lively woodland haven! Come along for the ride and witness the magic of tree planting unfold. Together, we’re making our planet greener, healthier, and more vibrant. Let’s create a legacy of sustainability that’s as fun and down-to-earth as it is impactful. Join us in celebrating the awesome power of trees in shaping our environment and the future!

May 2025 Update! We’ve now planted a further 1000-plus saplings, this time creating a Coppice in the Moor Meadow, an entirely new hedgerow spanning the length of the ‘Higher Pendeen’ field and improving established hedgerows. Come and explore the farm and growing habitats!
